Funding is the first read. A rate that has pushed well away from neutral and held there marks a crowded side, positive for crowded longs and negative for crowded shorts. The further it runs from normal, the more lopsided the book.
A funding rate calculator can show the total cost of holding through stretched funding, which is also a measure of the pressure the crowded side is carrying.

How to Avoid Being Squeezed
Traders who recognise squeeze conditions have more options than those who don’t.
The mistake that gets traders squeezed is sizing off how much they want to make rather than how much the market normally moves. A position sized so that ordinary volatility reaches its liquidation level is going to get caught eventually. Sizing so the liquidation level sits well outside the asset’s normal range is what keeps a routine swing from forcing a close.
A liquidation price calculator can confirm exactly where that level sits before committing to the trade. Liquidation fires on mark price, the composite reference price the exchange calculates from multiple spot feeds, not the chart price. A position can appear safe on the chart while the mark price has already crossed the liquidation level.
Stop placement concentrates at obvious levels, the round numbers and recent highs and lows, which are the same places liquidation clusters form. A stop sitting right on the obvious line is inside the zone most likely to get run. Placing it beyond the crowd, where a move has to be real to reach it, keeps a trader out of the wick that closes everyone else.
